Translated with an Introduction and Notes by Hermann Pálsson and Paul Edwards.
"Eyrbyggja Saga" is prominent in the great group of medieval Icelandic sagas that Magnus Magnusson has called "historical novels - the first novels to be written in Europe." Mixing realism with wild Gothic imagination, history with eerie tales of hauntings, it dramatizes a 13th-century view of the past, from the pagan anarchy of the Viking Age to the settlement of Iceland, the coming of Christianity and the beginnings of organized society. Its central figure is Snorri, a man so perplexingly ambiguous that the narrator himself is drawn to speculate on his motives and a character who brilliantly epitomizes the violent stresses of his times.
The present translation is based on Einar Olafur Sveinsson's standard edition in "Íslenzk fornrit", vol. 4 (Reykjavík, 1935). Earlier translations and editions are listed in the Bibliographical Notes on pp. 174-7.
