THE FIRST five chapters deal with the issues 1 see as central to
the question of women's writing and fe1ninist critical theory, foregrounding
as exemplary instances for constructing the subjects of
criticism-The Princess of Cleves, The Mill on the Floss, The Portuguese
Letters, Indiana, and Villette, in addition to the autobiographical
writings (writing fictions) of Sand, Daniel Stern, Colette,
and Beauvoir. In chapters 6- 9, under the thematics of "con1ing to
writing," I cake four novels of feminist signature to expose and
work through a certain number of proble1ns in contemporary critical
theory, notably the question of (female) authorship itself. In
the discussions of individual novels, The Peruvian Letters, Corinne,
Valentine, and The Vagabond, which like "Emphasis Added" grew
out of reaching situations and are structured as readings
